It seems like guys are always surprised when I beat them in a video game. When my husband’s friends come and I ask them if they want to play Halo 3 or Call of Duty 4, they are always surprised. It gets even worse once I beat them. It seems we need a girl games revolution because boys always regard girls who play as some kind of monsters.
We have to start with family games like Rock Band or Viva Piñata. Get the concept of how to use the controller and how to perfect your coordination. Also, you are not judged as much when you play these games in single or multiplayer mode with your friends. It seems that as soon as you start playing online, you are expected to be an amazing gamer.
There are quite a few games that are exclusively for one player and are a great place to start learning how to play. When playing solo for the first time, generally most games have tutorials that you can follow to help you learn to play. Especially strategy-type games like Warcraft 3 or Age of Empires can be especially great for learning how to play for the first time.
Some of the first person shooter games and other genres take you right into the game. In these games, you can try to play in single player mode on the easiest difficulty. Most game designers understand that people who don’t have the best coordination in the world will play their game. The easy mode in general can make your life much easier.
Another tip is that you need to make sure you follow the advice when it is offered to you. Guys are generally much more apt to help a girl who doesn’t understand concepts. However, they will greatly harass you when you try to play online, so DO NOT ask for help when playing online multiplayer. Also, you will notice how many pigs these young children and teens are, so make sure you have the option to play a male character. I know it’s horrible that you have to do this, but it really is the only way to avoid being harassed.
Also, a lot of times games that are especially gory just aren’t fun. Instead of playing Gears of War 2, you might want to try some of the games rated T for teens instead of the M games for adults. Many times these games are just as fun, but you avoid the gruesome details that are just plain disgusting. Unless you’re up for zombie movies or something like that, you might want to avoid games of this caliber.
Understand that you may not be good at a game when you start playing. If a game has a lot of criticism, keep playing. Many of these games can be very hostile to new players, but they can be absolutely incredible once you understand how to play. Even certain games have a slow introduction to building characters.
If a game seems overly easy at first, make sure you don’t give up as well. Sometimes the games are especially easy at first to help you learn the controls, but then they get a lot more difficult.
Never buy a set straight off the shelf. Go to a review website like gamespot.com before purchasing a game. It seems like this is one of the biggest mistakes new players make. When you go to the store, do not buy the game because the cover looks like a type of game that you would like to play. Make sure it’s not rated 43/100 before spending the $ 50 on the game.
You should also try to choose games within a genre that you like to play. If you play a game and you really don’t like it, make sure you remember what genre that game type is so you don’t buy a game like that again. For example, in my opinion, sports games are horrible. I always make sure to avoid this genre. However, I really enjoy playing strategy games where you move and the army and try to attack the other player. Sometimes playing RPGs can also be fun where you build a character to fight monsters and go on missions. However, you need to find your niche where you like to play.
If you haven’t played a lot of video games, I suggest you try a couple of used games in different genres or start renting games. There are some great online services that are similar to Netflix, except that you rent games. Just keep in mind that you want to rent the high-quality games.
Again, be sure to keep going. We definitely need more female players. I’m tired of being the only one of my friends who plays video games. All I want to do is talk about how cool my character is in World of Warcraft and they have no idea what I’m talking about. Trust me, this is a great way to spend your time. You will love entering the gaming world once you try some high quality games. If you have friends who play, ask them before you get a game.
