Finding yourself in the middle of a dental emergency while on vacation in a foreign country is a nightmarish thought for most people, especially when that country is also foreign-speaking! Unfortunately I found myself in exactly that position last year while on vacation in a city called Merida in southern Mexico, it’s the capital of a region called Yucatan.

My wife and I had been looking forward to the trip and had been planning it for several months. 2 weeks in the warm sun, enjoying the local culture and food, not to mention a much more relaxed pace of life. My job is stressful and I really needed a break.

About 3 days into the holiday I started feeling the first signs of pain in the back of my mouth and within 24 hours this had gotten progressively worse to the point where I couldn’t even sleep. Somehow, an infection had gotten into a section of gum around one of his wisdom teeth and it was clear that he needed to go to a dentist as soon as possible.

Fortunately, there is an online magazine called Yucatan Today that is created for the local English-speaking community that lives here and I was able to find dentists that other Americans were visiting and recommending. This was a godsend to say the least.

I quickly found a highly recommended dental office called “Dental Rosel” located in the north of the city, in an area called “Altabrisa”. Aside from personal recommendations, what appealed to me the most was that the dentist was internationally trained and that the clinic was equipped with the latest in dental technology. For some reason, my mind immediately equates a lot of technology with ‘less pain’.

Upon seeing Dr. Rosel he immediately helped me relax, I found his nature very warm, friendly and welcoming. He quickly identified the problem and prescribed a course of antibiotics to fix it. This was necessary before any dental work could be carried out. 3 days later I was back in the chair and had about an hour procedure to fix the problem for good.

For anyone visiting this region of southern Mexico who finds themselves in a similar position to me, I recommend that you first consult the opinion and advice of other expats living there. Personally speaking, I can recommend Dental Rosel as one of the best and most qualified dentists you will find in Merida.
