Tunku Puan Sri Azizah (Tunku is the title Malaysian royalty is born with and Puan Sri is a title bestowed by the King of Malaysia and Aziziah is a female name.) Tunku Puan Sri Azizah is a heaven sent angel who became my mother in law and mentor 32 years ago when I left Ireland and married her son Tunku Dato ‘Mu’tamir (nickname Roy).
In all the 32 years that I have known my mother-in-law, I have never heard an angry word leave her lips and I have never heard her raise her voice in any way, to her family, friends, grandchildren or her husband. All her life I heard her apologize to people even though she hadn’t done anything wrong.
She never cajoled me, demanded or asked me to follow her Malay cultural customs and so I did it because of her kind and unassuming manner. She allowed me to make the decision through her love for her child, as she knew that if it was my choice, she would do it with a true and loving heart…and guess what worked. She taught me to be forgiving and not to speak ill of people at any time and to be humble without ego and not to expect anything in return for my actions.
My mother in law comes from a long line of Sharifah. In Malaysia, the Sharifah are considered very special spiritually gifted individuals (they pass this spirituality down to one individual in each generation, my husband was the next chosen one, and now my youngest daughter, Martika, has been gifted with it). These heavenly chosen individuals are born with no evil thoughts and see the good in everything and everyone no matter what. Many times I have heard my mother-in-law apologize to those around her, who say harsh words, just in case she was responsible for her words.
