It’s hard to believe that one of the most popular teams in NFL history was once founded as the Dallas Texans in 1960. Although the team dominated much of the 1960s in the AFL, several decades have passed since the team he took home some Super Bowl Championships. However, the team continues to have a strong fan base, continually selling out games and setting records.

Will the Chiefs get their act together and make a big play for the Super Bowl in 2008? If 2007 was any indication, the answer would be no, as the team finished with an ugly 4-12 record. However, all of these losses have prompted some major changes to the Chiefs’ management and roster on the field. The Chiefs have a new owner, a new offensive coordinator and wide receivers coach. Head coach Herman Edwards is still back, and the team recently added some depth to the roster. Most recently, the Chiefs have signed Anthony Alabi, placekicker Nick Novak, safety Erick Harris, cornerback Chad Johnson, defensive tackle TJ Jackson, linebacker Demorrio Williams, tight end John Paul Foschi and fullback Oliver Hoyte. among others.

The 2008 NFL Draft was the biggest news, however, as the Chiefs chose LSU’s coveted Glenn Dorsey as their first round pick and fifth overall pick. The team also selected guard Branden Albert, running back Jamaal Charles and wide receiver Will Franklin among 8 other high caliber players. It’s not too surprising that Kansas City was declared the last “winner” in the draft, considering they fielded 12 rookies overall, the largest rookie pool, and their two top-15 picks. Dorsey’s draft was the biggest news, especially since the team surprised some by taking Dorsey when they weren’t in dire need of a defensive tackle. The team also sidesteps concerns about Dorsey’s legs, believing he is healthy enough to play, and arguably the best player in the draft overall. Will the Chiefs use their draft picks and make the playoffs this season?

Many people wonder if Brodie Croyle has what it takes to lead the franchise to a Superbowl in his third year with the Chiefs. Fortunately, the return of Larry Johnson and the safe hands of Tony Gonzalez should give him the ability to get the ball out of the way quickly. Unfortunately, Larry Johnson was only on pace to crack 1,000 yards before he was injured last year and his replacement, Smith, couldn’t move the chains effectively. To give Brodie the time he needs to pass the ball, the Chiefs’ offensive line will need to help set up the running game for the elite veteran.
