Most of the time, those who run a business know they need to be on social media, but chances are many people over the age of 50 don’t understand how social media works effectively enough to attract potential customers.

Not knowing much about social media and seeing the office junior on her phone all the time, they think that she must know how to use social media, so they think of giving the company social media to post ads and generate new business.

This is a big and expensive mistake let me tell you what happened.

It is of course so wrong on so many levels as there is no doubt that the girl knows how to be social, but she doesn’t know how to generate traffic (leads) and then be able to convert them into sales.

I saw this first hand the other day when visiting a property as a client. I didn’t go in there thinking about work. I was off duty and looking to have “ME” time. Being the extrovert that I am, I started talking to the owner where she told me what kind of things she was doing on social media and I asked to see her Facebook business page.

Just as I had thought, the page looked like flashing neon lights walking down the main drag in Las Vegas, you almost needed to wear sunglasses, the glow from those billboards was so bright!

I also noticed that it was obvious that I wasn’t the only one feeling that way as there were only mainly 3 views and no comments.

I couldn’t help myself, I rummaged through my carry-on bag to grab my phone, which somehow always finds its way to the bottom of the bag! Then I said that I was an expert in social networks and that I was going to show them the power of making social networks work correctly.

Of course, I asked them if they were okay with me filming the video and they were nervous and they didn’t need to be since I was basically going to have a chat with the business owner about his business, something she would already be comfortable with. The interview was fun and informative and the manager and worker relaxed as I elicited more information about the business from them.

We had fun and so did the people who watched and commented. Overall, I’ve got 3000 views, 30 comments, and a ton of inquiries about how to get in and last time I spoke to her, she had one of the biggest weeks she’s ever had on social media.

The moral of the story is to have the professionals run your campaigns to get sales; otherwise, you will waste a lot of time, and more importantly, money.
