I had lost my precious little Falcore, a teacup poodle, about 7 years ago and it took me until a year ago to get over his passing. I really loved that little dog and missed him very much. But the time came to share my love with another puppy and I started looking for the right one. He had wanted for a long time if he would ever have another small dog, a little silky Yorkie. I knew I didn’t want a little one from a pet store because of how they and the parents were being treated. So I decided to find a Dog Mill Rescue.

I searched for about 5 months and decided that I would give up a little silky Yorkie for adoption. I started researching and discovered that there were all kinds of rescue groups and they even specialized in certain breeds. I went to the North Shore Animal League America website and applied for a girl. I received a phone call from a lady in Trinidad Colorado, Conni, telling me that she had a little girl and her name was Katie, she is 2 years old and weighs about 4 pounds. She sent me photos of her and I immediately fell in love with her. We would have to wait about 2 weeks to get her, because she was going to be sterilized. I asked her what her circumstances were and what needs she had. She told me that she had had 2 little ones taken from her before she was 2 years old and that she was alive only to raise children, she had 2 caesarean sections from both litters and they were going to take her away because caesarean sections cost too much. There were no other needs except lots of love. She also told me that she would have to make a house call to make sure that the dog had a good life with the family that receives her. I agreed and the following weekend we had a visitor. I was very impressed with the way they do adoptions. My husband and I were given the go-ahead to adopt little Katie. Boy am I glad she’s dressed up, she’s so little and cute!

We went to pick up Katie on a Saturday, we had to drive 200 miles to get to her, and my husband and I were so excited! We pulled up to her place to meet her and when we walked in all I could see was this adorable little face peeking out of a pack of pets. They handed her over to me and she came right over to shake me and wonder what was going on. My husband melted, his face showed so much love for that girl. We then went and got her some food, chews and water and headed home.

On the way home we had brought him a towel to lay on the middle console, he lay for about an hour on my lap and then wanted to look around. She was so happy and not shaking now and she was starting to enjoy the ride home, she finally fell asleep on the console. We got home and brought her to the house, took her down so she could check out the place and see where she could go herself. She checked every part of that house, and then she came to me while I was sitting on a chair and wanted her to hug me. I picked her up and she sighed and lay down next to me.

Since then he has been a true member of the family. She has her bed on top of our pillows, she has a robe to wear at night, she has a coat that mommy made especially for her with all the pretty designs, she shops with us at the local grocery store, Wal-Mart, and He even goes to visit with the family. She is never alone and is loved so deeply.

Now it tells me when I should be in the office and work in the morning. She stands at the door until I come in and then she goes to her chair with her favorite blanket and lays down while I work. At night, after dinner and our ice cream dessert, she comes over to the chair I’m sitting in and she acts like she wants to be picked up. I go to find her and she runs into the bedroom, which is her way of saying it’s time to go to bed. On her daily walk, dad often takes her and goes a different way than mom and sometimes that confuses her, but she is happy to go for a walk.

It’s a great bell and lets me know when even a mouse crosses the yard! We are working on what she needs to bark, neighbors and neighbors’ pets don’t need to bark. She is a little afraid of other people and dogs, but she will soon get over it.

I am so glad to have little Katie, she shows so much love and affection; she is so dedicated to my husband and me. I made the right decision and I will always be grateful for the rescue groups that save little girls and boys from this terrible life. We can show them a lot of love and attention and show them a good and normal life, they respond very well. So consider adopting a Dog Mill Rescue when you’re ready for that new member of the family.
