If you like your burgers unpretentious and your burger joint is, well, joints, then I have a few suggestions for you.

Chicago is packed with great burger joints. In every corner and in every corner you can find a delicious hamburger or cheeseburger. But some are above the crowd. On your next visit to Chicago, be sure to try at least one of these amazing burgers. You will be so glad you did.

1. The Roe Burger at Flub a Dub Chub’s Hot Dog Emporium

Sure it’s a hot dog place, and Chicago is known the world over for its Chicago Dogs, but don’t miss the Roe Burger. It’s 1/2 pound of charcoal grilled beef on a pretzel bun. Dressed with crispy bacon, sharp cheddar cheese, and creamy avocado, it’s a winner.

This family owned joint is at 3021 N. Broadway and the Roe Burger will set you back $7.50

2. The Burger at Nightwood

Nightwood chefs get a regular order every 3 weeks like clockwork: 1/2 cow. They process the meat on site and the shoulder is ground for their signature burgers. The tender meat is seasoned with Worcestershire sauce and then grilled over a wood fire. Served with homemade spicy mustard and a beer and cheddar cheese combo on a chewy ciabatta bun.

Nightwood can be found at 2119 S Halsted and the burger is $13

3. Grilled Cheeseburger at Joe’s Seafood, Prime Steak and Stone Crab

I’m surprised Joe hasn’t added the grilled cheeseburger to his name yet. Considering how delicious it is, and the fact that almost everything else it serves is already there, I look forward to seeing it anytime. How good is the double thickness cheeseburger? It is served naked, with nothing else on the bread. No seasoning. No dressing rooms. And you know what? That’s fine with me.

Of course, you can add the usual toppings (bacon, sautéed onions) for free, but try the burger first. You may not miss them at all.

Etc from Joe. it’s at 60 W. Grand Ave. and the grilled cheeseburger is $10.50 completely naked.
