All over the world there are different types of readers. Identifying where you belong in this area will help you make the necessary changes to help with your speed reading ambition. I know three types of readers: the auditory, the motor and the visual reader. What category do you belong to? A careful analysis of each of them will help you appreciate what needs to be done to achieve an amazing read rate, regardless of the category of reader you belong to.

Reader Categories:

1. Auditory reader. Auditory means the use of the sense of hearing to perceive sounds of information around us and within us. An auditory reader listens to the words he reads. In other words, he unconsciously listens to every word that he reads. He hears these words because he tries to read them unintentionally, therefore, as he reads, an auditory reader mutters or whispers. For some there is the vibration of the Adam’s apple while reading. The truth is that attention is paid to reading and listening to each word, the reading speed slows down and again the level of comprehension of an auditory reader is limited. Therefore, to fully comprehend any material, the auditory reader must spend more time on that particular item which ultimately defeats the principles of speed reading.

2. Motorized reader. It is called a motor reader because of the movement it implies. A motor reader moves some parts of his body while trying to read. Some motor readers continually tap their legs on the floor while reading without consciously knowing they are doing it. Others move other parts of the body while reading. On closer inspection, the motor reader is seen to be a faster reader than the auditory reader. However, the movements of the body parts cause a problem in the speed of reading.

3. View reader. The fastest type of reader is the sight reader. This is because this type of reader focuses on visual aids and pictures to read. A visual reader has a faster comprehension of the material because his type of reader allows him to visualize the information and thus have a greater understanding of the material under consideration. Unlike other types of readers who have distractions in the form of body movements and listening to words.

How does the above reader type affect you as a potential speed reader? Identifying where you belong here will help you make the necessary changes. So if you want to be a speed reader, you’ll need to be a sight reader. As a sight reader, it will be easier for you to plan and implement those speed reading techniques necessary to achieve a good reading pace.

So what are you doing at this junction? Try reading this same material again. Try to read normally, but this time pay attention to yourself and see if you are moving any part of your body or listening to the words in your mind. Do you murmur while reading? It is important that you catch all these shortcomings of speed reading. Once you can identify where you belong, it will be easy for you to make a change from where you are now to where you want to be. Being a sight reader is not going to be easy, you will need to practice reading without those unnecessary distractions that characterize other types of readers.

To see how well you’re doing, once you’ve discovered that you can sight read, try rereading this article. This time try to read as fast as you can with the stopwatch in hand to measure the time. Check your level of understanding. Continuous practice will help you become a sight reader successfully, then your goal of becoming a speed reader is gradually being met.
