You may be an avid DIY fan or maybe it’s something you’ll be trying for the first time. There can be many reasons why you want to make your own furniture, whether it’s because of the price or because you have a unique idea. Either way, you can get creative and do it yourself when it comes to making your own patio furniture.

You will need to decide what type of garden furniture you want. In other words, will it be wood or metal? For wood, you won’t need much skill, as hopefully you had some experience with carpentry in school or with your father when you were young. For metal, you may need a bit of skill as the tools you’ll need are specialized.

If you opt for a metal framed patio set, then you will need to get the same type of metal. This will help you with the structure and the welding process. With metal you will have to weld the pieces to make it strong. To begin the process, you will need to measure the pieces and cut them to size. Be sure to measure twice to avoid mishaps with the length of the pieces. Lay out all the parts in the order you will join them. Please check this again. Once you are sure of the position of each part, start welding them. Once the parts are together and you have all the patio seating, you can paint it any color you like. The metal patio set will prove to be tough and cold to sit on. To do this, you can simply measure the seat and back areas so that an upholsterer can make the cushions for you.

The wood option is often more popular because it doesn’t rust and is a cheaper alternative to metal. In most cases, people find unused pallets and use them to create their own furniture masterpieces. With wooden pallets you don’t have to start from scratch. You can simply take a pallet as is, add four small legs to each corner, sand it down and paint it to create an outdoor coffee table. You may want to add a glass top for a smooth surface. For the seats, you will have to disassemble the pallet to join the wood and make it resistant. You will need a saw, a hammer, nails and glue to achieve this. Again, be sure to measure the length of the lumber so that your patio seats are all the same size and symmetrical. If you are satisfied with the measurements, glue and nail the pieces of wood together. You can paint the wood or varnish it for a natural look. Measure the seat and back. Send those measurements along with your choice of material to the furniture manufacturer who can do it for you. You don’t have to do that part yourself, because sewing the cushions can be a bit tricky if you haven’t done it before.
