Many functions of digital cameras are based on those of traditional cameras. The main handling difference is that instead of loading film, a memory card is inserted. Almost all functions of digital cameras require electrical power, while many functions of traditional cameras can be controlled mechanically.

digital zoom
This feature takes the largest image produced by the lens and then enlarges the center portion typically two or three times. Digital cameras therefore offer a zoom range that appears to be longer than that offered by the lens. The process is like using your software to open the image produced by the camera’s longest focal length setting and enlarge half of it. Digital zoom saves you the trouble and possibly gives you better image quality, but it only enlarges the central part. If you were to zoom in on the image yourself, you can choose which part of the scene to zoom in on.

shutter control
The shutter button on a digital camera is actually a switch that sets off a whole series of complicated electronic operations.

windows
The subject is viewed through the viewfinder window while other windows are used for autofocus functions.

Flash
A built-in flash is useful for working casually in low-light conditions.

Magnifiers
Many digital cameras offer a zoom lens so you can easily change the field of view. But extreme wide-angle effects are more difficult to achieve.

Image transfer
The camera’s ability to record images is limited by the capacity of the memory card in use. You can insert a new card when the first card is full, or transfer files to other storage devices or to a computer. Some cameras connect directly to a printer, allowing you to print without the intervention of a computer.

control S
The switches and buttons set different modes of operation, such as image quality settings.

LCD screen
The LCD screen allows the camera to display images in seconds, as well as providing information on the settings of the video cameras used.

Configuration buttons
Combinations of buttons and information on the LCD screen allow a wide range of settings to be made, adding to the camera’s versatility.
