Shenbaga Vilasam, set in the unassuming village of Samathur in Coimbatore’s Pollachi district, is like stepping back in time. The royal heritage is mixed with the rich and wonderful rustic smells of the town. Built in the early 1900s as a private residence for the then Zamindarini. This beautiful mansion boasts of a long past, dating back some 2000 years.

It is steeped in tradition and culture, with all the modern luxuries. It is a perfect getaway from the stress of the city. Shenbaga Vilasam is located on hundreds of acres of working agricultural land. It opened its doors to tourists in 2007. Built with a unique combination of South Indian architecture, the mansion has been renovated over time. The traditional layered ceiling has been carried over to the dining room. Giant wooden pillars support the colorful hand-dyed Chettinad mosaics. The place is filled with heirlooms and vintage collectibles acquired by the family over the years. There are four air-conditioned rooms, named after the women of the house: Manickam, Maruthapusham, Radhamani and Jaya. Each room exudes warmth, comfort and a luxurious atmosphere. There are plenty of places to sit and terraces surrounding the rooms, bringing in the outdoors. Relax in the wooden chairs on the seats and enjoy the simple life of the village.

Shenbaga offers authentic, traditional and fusion styles of South Indian vegetarian cuisine. Vegetarian food is the royal family’s way of eating and is served in the formal dining room, surrounded by timeless historical pieces. The formal living room opens to the sky. It lets in the sun but at the same time it gives shade.

Being an active farm, guests can take a walk around the artificial lake created by the Vanavarayar family. Spot peacocks, get a lesson on South Indian cooking, or just sit back and watch the villagers go about their business. Explore the town, ride a bull cart, visit the local town market and talk to a simple farmer or enjoy the handmade crafts in any of the simple houses. The artificial lake attracts many birds and the farm is dotted with coconut plantations. Surrounded by nature as it is, it is a paradise for nature lovers. Shenbaga Vilasam can be a starting point for a tour of South India or just a place to kick back and relax.

Located in Samathur Village of Pollachi, it is about 40 km from Coimbatore Airport. Kochi airport is about 200 km away. The nearest train station is Pollachi.
