Although most of us have heard of the Canary Islands, the main islands we visit are usually Lanzarote, Gran Canaria and Tenerife, however the second largest island Fuerteventura is proving just as popular.

Although not as built up as its sister islands, Fuerteventura boasts some of the most beautiful scenery in the Canaries and has more than 150 beaches, a true paradise for beach lovers!

The Canaries enjoy sunshine all year round and although Fuerteventura is a bit cooler than some of the other islands, temperatures still hover in the mid-twenties during the winter months and into the mid-thirties during the summer.

There are numerous resorts located around the island and these include Jandia, Costa Calma and Morro Jable in the south, Corralejo and El Cotillo in the north and Caleta de Fuste on the east coast, right next to the airport.

All the resorts offer plenty for tourists to do and new tourist attractions are being developed around the island to attract even more visitors. There are now two golf courses, a water park, go-karting tracks, clay pigeon shooting, horse riding, quad biking and cycling to name just a few!

Water sports are also popular on the island with a number of fantastic dive sites on offer. In Jandia, the Windsurfing Championship is also held every year, which attracts thousands of surfers from all over the world.

If you enjoy walking, Fuerteventura is an ideal island for hiking, and with the right tour guide, stunning scenery can be found off the beaten track. It is also worth hiring a car for at least a day or two to explore the more secluded parts of the island and find one or two of the more remote beaches that Fuerteventura has to offer.

Tasting typical Canarian food in an indoor restaurant is also essential and can be much cheaper than eating in one of the tourist complexes. The fish restaurants are also worth trying and many give you the opportunity to watch the fish being cooked in a typical Canarian oven in the open air.

In general, the island of Fuerteventura is a must for people of all ages. With the option of partying at one of the resorts, relaxing on a secluded beach, or being a little more adventurous and trying your hand at go-karting, Fuerteventura seems to have it all.
