Working from home or telecommuting is becoming more and more popular among most professionals. If you work from home or end up taking a lot of your work home with you, then you need some sort of home office.

Setting up an office in your home does not have to be expensive. There are many ways to build an inexpensive home office to suit your needs, whether you work from home or just want a home office for the family.

Section of a part of a room for office space

Some people have the misconception that a home office has to be a completely separate room. Although this is very nice to have, it is not necessary at all. Unless you need a lot of storage space for your business, you can have a home office in a closet or in a corner of another room, such as the dining room or kitchen. In fact, a corner of a room or closet often works best for most work-at-home parents who need to keep an eye on children, or for parents with teens who want to keep an eye on their computer time.

Turn a closet into a home office

If you want to turn a closet into a home office, simply remove the doors and remove the closet rod. Then you can choose a simple desk to put in the closet with a comfortable chair.

You can include shelves and organization space on the back walls of the closet for any storage options you may need. Hang a long curtain over the front of the closet if you want it to be hidden from view at certain times. This is a very inexpensive way to build a home office that doesn’t require a lot of space.

Add bookshelves and a desk to any room

For some people, a home office can be as simple as a built-in bookcase or storage area or computer cabinet. This is a very inexpensive home office that can be added to almost any room, from the dining room to the kitchen to any bedroom.

If you have a separate room for your office, you can still build an inexpensive space. Simple things like painting the room your favorite color or a soft color like light green or blue can make all the difference in a room.

To decorate the walls, simply add photos in frames. The photos can be of nature scenes that you or your family took if you wish. Add some shelves or shadow boxes on the walls for storage that can also double as decorative items.

Some of the books that you may need for your business can act as decorations if they look good. Things like decorative boxes and trinkets can be filled with office supplies, and you’d never know they’re both functional and stylish.

If you’re just starting your business and don’t have as much money to immediately spend on your home office, then build slowly. You may want to start with a desk and chair in the room. Then, when you have the money, you can wait until you find deals or deals on decorative and storage items that you can use for the room. There’s no need to go into debt trying to make the best home office before your business is making money.
