Very often we hear stories about the forgotten old man. Maybe they had no offspring, or maybe a tragedy occurred and their children survived, maybe they are the surviving spouse and there is no one left. Those are terrible cases to consider.
Still, let me explain one that can be even worse. Perhaps there has been an unfortunate break in the family and your children and grandchildren do not call or come to visit you. Whatever the case, it is sad to see. Most of us are saddened when we read stories like this. Yes, there are always two sides of the coin. Maybe a parent or grandparent had intentionally distanced themselves over the years, and maybe part of the blame is there too?
Okay, we accept that there may be family problems, but our seniors are still part of the family! Too often we forget all the years of parenting our parents gave us. I was listening to someone the other day tell me a story about a friend’s family and the emotional pain that had occurred over many decades, and it reminded me of a video I saw. Perhaps if family members had seen this video, they could have reconsidered their positions and put past animosity behind.
What I mean is that life is too short, don’t let it pass because one day it will be too late to ask for forgiveness.
There’s that great YouTube video I saw, I’d like you to take a moment out of your day and watch it now, you’ll be glad you did. The video is titled; “An elderly mother wrote this letter to her daughter” and I recommend that you go to YouTube, find it and watch it. I sincerely hope you think about that and how important family is.
Remember that we will all be old and older one day, it will be difficult for us to move and take care of ourselves. We will need help and assistance. Wouldn’t it be wonderful if we all thought about this now and paid for it a bit? That’s the least we can do: provide care, respect and dignity to older people and give back a little humanity in the process. Why not think about this now, start today, and commit to helping an older relative, close relative, or neighbor? Live, love and enjoy your time here on earth.
